Blog, Living in the Abundance of Christ

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

What keeps you from setting goals and keeping them? Any type of goals. Small ones like organizing your home (or a room), or big goals like paying off debt. As I thought about this, and the many, many years that goals were not even on my radar, a few reasons came to mind.

  1. We have no idea what we want to do or what direction we want to go, so we just live without making any plans.
  2. The hopes and dreams that we have had, have never come to fruition or have been taken away from us, and we don’t want to have false hope.
  3. We are living in survival mode, basically on auto-pilot, dealing with stress from life: loss, illness, logistics (basic necessities), and can really only deal with today.

I have experienced all of these scenarios, and it’s not a desirable place to be, but if you have Christ, than you have hope. Here are 3 verses that correlate with and answer  the above reasoning for lack of goal setting.

  1. “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he.” Proverbs 29:18
  2. “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
  3. “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.” Proverbs 24:7

Having goals gives us something to look forward to accomplishing. “…for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13).  Even though things don’t always go as we’ve planned, we can have a sense of direction. Maybe, for now that’s just seeking the Lord in your prayers and Bible reading. Seeking the Lord is a great place to be and we should always be in this place (Proverbs 8:17)!  Maybe, right now you can only make small daily goals like: reading a verse from the Bible, cleaning out a drawer, or looking over your budget. Maybe, eventually you’ll start making bigger goals, as the Lord allows (Matthew 19:26). Be assured that where ever you’re at, if your hope is in Christ, he is right there with you.

“So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.” 2 Corinthians 8:11-12
